We are reselling Dell and a few HP systems that we get through Infotech and making maybe $100 per machine at best. Sometimes we make so little off of a machine that we just tell the customer to buy it from Dell and then bring it to us for AV, etc.

What is the best brand to resell- custom builds or otherwise...

I sell Lenovo and a few HP systems. They have a great partner support team, lots of incentive programs and really reliable - well priced computers.

We sell Dell systems through their partner program. We typically sell the items at list price since we are about adding value and not focusing on the price. The margins vary from system to system, but average around 15%

The system are always presented as part of a 'solution' and not just a product to be purchased.

We sell Lenovo to businesses and build our own for home/soho. Good margins on ours even with a 3 yr onsite warranty.

@natrat - Can you actually compete with big-name vendors on price or do you sell quality and service with your white boxes? I stopped building white box computers around 4 years ago when I realized I couldn't even come within 100 dollars without markup.

Yep we can compete with the big name vendors. The HP stuff you get in the big retailers here is very overpriced or underspecced (or both) and Dell are still primarily an online retailer here (in Australia although they are getting into some of the larger stores). Where I live a lot of people value talking to a computer specialist rather than a sales person in a big retailer too.

I dont do really high volume though, service is our primary business, but all my clients who need a PC buy them from me and let me decide whether to build them one or provide a more business focussed system like Lenovo.

I generally make $150 on a $595 PC (box only) with decent components and three year onsite warranty. thats our cheapest.
