Is there any way to change the default account view so that it only lists customers?

Yes, you can set the Accounts window to display customers only by clicking the [all types] pull down menu, and selecting "Customer" in the select type.

Then go to Windows > Save Current Open Windows Configuration for Next Login. Next time you login to the system, the windows you currently have open, with their filters, will be opened.
