1) What are the best backup / recovery options?
2) Is the .zip file created with the RangerMSP backup utility just a copy of the directory. If we needed to restore RangerMSP (caused by the other server crashing) could we just restore the files from the RangerMSP backup .zip file?

1. To back up RangerMSP, you may consider two ways:

* You can use the RangerMSP backup utility. Go to Tools > Backup menu and follow the steps. Note that this backup utility creates a zip file in <server>\RangerMSP\Utils folder with RangerMSP-specific data files only, and doesn't backup your documents. You should back up your documents separately.

* You can also backup the entire RangerMSP server folder and all its sub folders externally. This will enable you to restore the files much faster should you need to do so. Any backup utility/program should work, such as standard tape backup, zip, rar, etc. Make sure to backup your documents folder.

In any case, it is recommended to copy the backup file to another hard disk, computer or media.

2. The RangerMSP backup .zip file contains only the RangerMSP data folders, not a copy of the entire RangerMSP directory. If you need to recover, you should restore all the files for these folders (i.e. RangerMSP\Db and the RangerMSP\DbSys folders). If you perform an external full backup of the RangerMSP folder and all of the sub-folders you can simply restore the whole RangerMSP folder with its sub-folders.

You can read about backup and recovery in our FAQ on the subject.
