can they be the same, or will this cause massive loops and errors? what does everyone here use for these addresses \ aliases?

Our alerts server address and public email address is the same. This is a user account in Exchange that is checked by CommitCRM and no one else.

We have separate e-mail address for the Internal Support Email Address. This is a mail-enabled public folder in Exchange that has explicitly given anonymous the create permission (as well as any other default accounts on the security permissions tab).

I hope this helps.

Yeah,

Support@domain.com is a user in AD with Exchange account. Alert server checks via pop. We then have an internal email address internal-support@domain.com as a distribution group.
