Commit SQL Database Server (CSD)

The Commit product provides customers with a reliable, advanced and network ready shared file based database.

Commit SQL Database Server (CSD) is an optional additional product for the Commit product. CSD is an SQL based client/server database which provides a robust solution for larger networks with many concurrent users and a high database transaction volume. It provides bulletproof data integrity on networks and increased speed.

CSD also grants you the license to use Commit remotely using technologies such as Terminal Services. This allows remote users to run Commit through a remote session on the server. We also recommend our Commit Web Interface module for remote users.

CSD withstands power blackouts, workstation lockups and system crashes without any data loss or corruption. All data access is handled and double-checked on the server, not by each workstation, providing maximum protection. Only the data needed is transmitted across the network wire, a particularly valuable feature for larger databases and a high volume of users on the network. CSD installs in minutes and works effortlessly behind the scenes to protect your data and increase Commit's speed.

There are no ongoing administrative costs. CSD runs on your server and almost never require any user intervention, settings, periodic maintenance, etc.

CSD is an optional addition to the Commit product and is priced according to the number of concurrent users accessing the database server at the same time (this is not related to the number of Commit Active Employees licenses you have). CSD is available in 5, 10, 15, 25, 50, 100 and 250 user license sizes. The cost is added to the standard price of Commit.

  Frequently Asked Questions

I have already entered data into Commit; will my data be secure after installing CSD?
Yes. All your data and settings will be retained and available following installation of CSD.

How can I tell if I need CSD?
  CSD is only required when:
1. Your LAN is growing, with an increasing number of concurrent users and a higher database transaction volume.
2. You want to use remote technologies such as Terminal Services to open a session on your server for remote users.

Does CSD provide additional features to users?
No. CSD is a technology oriented product. The feature set of Commit remains the same.

  Does CSD use Microsoft SQL?
No. CSD uses the Advantage Database Server as our backend. This helps us achieve high performance, a bulletproof database and a high level of data integrity. It is also easy to install and requires a minimum of ongoing administration.

  What OS are supported?
You need a server running Windows 2000, Windows XP Professional or Windows 2003 server (the server where Commit is installed). Commit SQL Database Server runs as a Windows service.

What is the difference between Commit licensing and CSD licensing?
Commit is licensed and priced according to the number of Active Employees managed in the system, and regardless of the number of PCs on the network the Commit client is installed on. The price only increases when you find it necessary to purchase additional Active Employee licenses. This licensing scheme doesn't change when using CSD.

CSD is an optional additional product which is licensed and priced by the number of users accessing the database server at the same time. When using CSD you can still install Commit on as many PCs on your network as needed, but the number of concurrent users who are using Commit is limited to the number of concurrent users you've purchased. CSD is available in packages of 5, 10, 15, 25, 50, 100 and 250 user licenses.

For example, if you manage 15 employees in Commit, you need 15 Active Employee licenses. When you decide to use CSD you may find that you only need to purchase a 5 concurrent user license if no more than 5 users are running Commit on your local network at the same time.

Does Commit Web Interface also use CSD?
Yes. Commit Web Interface takes full advantage of CSD. It utilizes one SQL Concurrent User and should run on the same server.

Will I ever need to upgrade Commit SQL Database Server?
Like many other commercial products, you may be required to upgrade when a new major version is released. This would probably be when the backend database server we use, Advantage, releases a new major version, which is usually every couple of years.

Does Commit Upgrade Plan include free CSD updates?
The Commit SQL Database (CSD) add-on includes third-party licenses and therefore only minor CSD updates are included, while major version upgrades are not. CSD major version upgrades are usually released once every two years and are offered for an attractive price which is considerably lower than that of a new CSD license.
